Between 2018 and 2020, I developed a new magnet capo system for the guitar. The adjustable capos opened up capacities of the guitar through radical open-string sets. I demonstrated this system in my article in Soundboard Scholar, where I explained the transformation of instrumental affordances and musical space by using the terminology of Jonathan De Souza. Supported by the Altamira Guitar Foundation, now I am presenting a new guitar prototype that integrates the magnet capo system. The guitar is built by Hanson Yao and the fretboard was transformed by Oren Myers. My research is supported by the University of Surrey, International Guitar Research Centre, where my supervisor is Prof. Stephen Goss. This beautiful instrument still seems to be an explored world with hidden treasures and mysteries. The transformed fretboard enables a similar function as a piano pedal; notes can be held without using the left hand. The initial idea of this instrument came when I started to transcribe Ligeti's Musica Ricercata. My wish to translate Ligeti's pitch sets to open string sets led me to this new guitar. The main purpose of this research is to expand the boundaries of the guitar's idiom. I approach this objective via three various themes: transcriptions, collaboration with composers, improvisation. I am looking forward sharing more with you soon!
